After seeing this painting, a good friend of mine asked me, “What inspired you to turn so bright? I’ve always known you to be more into the melancholic tonalities…”?

He is very perceptive, and his question reminds me why I love to paint: I am often fascinated by what people say or ask about my work, and those that are probing enough keep me introspective. The past year or so marks a sort of evolution or unraveling in the way I’ve come to approach life. And I hadn’t really looked to see how this evolution has sort of manifested itself in my output.

I’m not sure how I feel about the meaning of his question, because it makes me feel both vulnerable and proud. And maybe this painting reflects these feelings, too. It is a bright palette, but I’ve kept the little red “seedlings” to grow limply out at the end of the yellow, wavy lines, to suggest that they are dying.

These moribund “seedlings” have the effect of extinguishing the dynamism of the yellow and the blue lines. In other words, I feel that the painting can be viewed as being deceptively hopeful. Melancholia may yet still be ever present.
